Personal education plans (PEPs)

The Personal Education Plan (PEP)

The PEP forms part of the wider care plan and is a statutory document for our children. In Staffordshire, we use ePEP to record PEP documents. The PEP should promote aspirational achievement in education with our child’s needs at the centre of this.  All those involved in promoting the educational success of our child should attend the PEP meeting including our child themselves.

The PEP document will play a role in tracking and monitoring our child’s progress as they move through education. Each term, aspirational targets will be set with the aim of supporting our child to achieve in education. PEPs should be completed at least termly but may need to be completed more frequently.

For our children who have recently come into the care of the local authority, a PEP meeting should be completed within 10 working days. It is the social worker’s responsibility to arrange the PEP meeting. A new to care PEP should still take place during school holidays, and staff from the Virtual School shoud be invited to attend.

 Pupil Premium Plus (PP+)

In Staffordshire, the Virtual School manages the allocation of PP+ for our children of statutory school age. It is allocated through SMART targets in our child’s PEP.

PP+ is currently allocated at up to £500 per term for each of our statutory school age children.

PP+ is used to support our child’s academic journey and it should focus on improving attainment and progress. This may also include reducing any barriers to learning, e.g. emotional health & well-being support. It could be used to support wider learning opportunities through accredited courses. It should be used in addition to the normal support and interventions a school would put in place for any child.

The use of PP+ should be aspirational and encourage and support our child to surpass their academic targets. We would expect two academic SMART targets on our children’s PEPs.

PP+ targets are agreed with joint discussion at the termly PEP meeting. Our child’s voice should be central to this. PP+ targets are added to our child’s SMART targets page on their PEP.

In some individual cases, there may be a need for greater individual funding to support our child. Discussion can be had with your virtual school district coordinator.
